The Niagara Parks Commission is a Provincial Crown Agency, incorporated by the act of the Provincial Legislature on April 23, 1887. The Niagara Parks Commission was founded with the mandate to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Falls and the Niagara River corridor as well as commemorate the historical, cultural and environmental significance while maintaining financial self-sufficiency. Today the area owned and maintained by Niagara Parks has grown into what is North America’s most completely maintained Parks system, encompassing 1,720 hectares (4,250 acres) of parkland and 56 kilometres (35 miles) of roadway and recreational trail along the Niagara River from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Niagara Parks is like a city within a city, complete with it's own police force, road maintenance, transportation system, snow and garbage removal services. Niagara Parks maintains and operates attractions such as the Maid of the Mist, Whirlpool Areo Car, Journey Behind the Falls, White Water Walk and the Butterfly Conservatory. Niagara Parks also offers golf courses including Legends on the Niagara and Whirlpool Golf Course, picnic grounds, a marina, restaurants, tours, gift shops, a School of Horticulture, Botanical Gardens, Niagara Heritage Trail and hundreds of acres of nature & gardens, floral displays. The Niagara Parks Commission helps attracts millions of tourist each year to Niagara Falls Canada. Niagara Parks holds the Winter Festival of Lights on the grounds of Queen Victoria Park and organizes fantastic fireworks displays.
